Balayage vs. Highlights: Which Is Right for You?

Both add dimension, but the technique, maintenance, and finish are very different. Here's how to choose between balayage and traditional foil highlights.

Balayage vs. Highlights: Which Is Right for You? — April Marie Hair Design in Lexington, MA

One of the most common questions I hear in my Lexington studio is: 'Should I get balayage or highlights?' The honest answer is that both are excellent — they just serve different goals. Let's compare them so you can choose with confidence.

The technique difference

Highlights are created using foils. Sections of hair are woven, lightener is applied, and the foil is folded to isolate and intensify the lift. Balayage is painted freehand onto the surface of the hair without foils, creating a softer, more diffused result.

Maintenance & regrowth

  • Foil highlights create a more uniform, brighter result but show regrowth sooner — typically every 6–8 weeks.
  • Balayage grows out seamlessly with no harsh line, so you can stretch to 10–14 weeks between appointments.
  • If you love bright, uniform blonde, foils may be your match. If you want low-maintenance, lived-in dimension, balayage wins.

Can you combine them?

Absolutely. Many of my guests blend both — foils for brightness at the top, balayage for softness through the ends. This hybrid approach gives you the best of both worlds and is one of my signature looks.

There's no wrong choice — only the choice that fits your hair, your lifestyle, and how often you want to be in my chair.
