How to Care for Balayage Hair Between Appointments

Your balayage is an investment. Here's how to keep it vibrant, glossy, and brass-free between salon visits with the right at-home routine.

How to Care for Balayage Hair Between Appointments — April Marie Hair Design in Lexington, MA

You've just left my chair with gorgeous hand-painted balayage — now how do you keep it looking fresh until your next visit? A few simple habits make all the difference.

Wash less, wash cool

Hot water opens the cuticle and accelerates color fade. Wash with cool or lukewarm water, and try to stretch to 2–3 washes per week. A good dry shampoo is your best friend between wash days.

Use color-safe, sulfate-free products

Sulfates strip color. I recommend Virtue Labs Recovery Shampoo and Conditioner — sulfate-free, color-safe, and powered by Alpha Keratin to repair damage while you wash.

Weekly deep conditioning

  • Use a restorative treatment mask once a week to replenish moisture.
  • Apply a healing oil to mid-lengths and ends to seal the cuticle and add shine.
  • Consider a purple toning treatment every few weeks to neutralize brassiness.

Protect from heat

Always use a heat protectant before hot tools, and keep your iron temperature moderate. Excessive heat is the fastest way to dull your color and damage your ends.

Great color is half the work — the other half is how you care for it at home.
